Amigos Artistas is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization founded by Dr.Romeo F. Montalvo, Jr. in 2001. Dr. Montalvo is a pediatrician in Brownsville, Texas whose passion is collecting Latin American and Hispanic Art- painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. Amigos Artistas' goal is to promote the visual arts in our community and involve out youth in artistic endeavors. Our name was inspired by Brownsville's yearly celebration between Brownsville and its sister city in Mexico names Matamoros. The two-nations fiesta reminds our communities of the unity that exists between the two, and is a celebration of our culture. In that same spirit, Amigos Artistas was formed.
Amigos Artistas has two major annual exibitions. Our first major annual exhibition is on the third weeks of February, we invite masters an d emerging artists from either the United States or Latin America to exhibit their art work. This show is held at the Historic Brownsville Museum. We promote the events via a traditional opening reception that is open to the public who is given an opportunity to meet the artist. This exhibition continues through the month of March. In late summer, our second major annual event called "Art In The Park" which is held at the Dean Porter Ringgold Park Indoor Civic Pavillion. "Art in the Park" provides a venue for all our neighboring Mexican cities. At this event Amigos Artistas in conjunction with the Brownsville Children's Museum provides art & crafts activities for the children. Both of these annual events are free to the public.
Through these events and other efforts, Amigoa Artistas hopes to promote its own local artists and expose our community to art inspired by our local culture. Everyone is always welcome to our events.
